History of DayBreak Disciples

DayBreak Disciples began as a Bible study at a local church in Canton, Michigan, in the Spring of 2009. We are currently going through the book of Matthew sentence by sentence, taking all the time we need to read, comment, ask questions and reflect on what we are studying.

It's great to read God's word like a book. However, something special takes place in the hearts and lives of people when we participate in an in-depth Bible study. Real-life issues are discussed and practical applications from God’s word are revealed and can be applied to those situations. Questions are asked and insights are shared from everyone who attends.

Not everyone can attend our weekly class. Thus the vision came for our E-Newsletter, with weekly devotions and Bible studies. Now you, too, can take part in our class – no matter what time of day or night – from the convenience of your personal computer.

Every Tuesday the newsletter is sent out by email. The devotions and studies come from Sunday's class. Usually, an interesting insight, comment or question arises from the class that we want to explore further. This is what is then discussed and commented on in the E-Newsletter. This is a simple idea with positive results; sharing what we are learning in the class with you, who cannot physically attend. Powerful, life-changing truths from the Word of God come out of our studies. When you read this E-Newsletter, you will be encouraged and challenged in your everyday life. You will discover more about God’s amazing Word and your life will be changed for the better.

A personal invitation to join DayBreak Disciples!

Now you, too, can be a vital part of our questioning and investigative research. Send us your comments or ask questions by email. We promise to do research and respond to it on the website or through the E-Newsletter as time permits.

May the Lord bless and keep you. Working together to build God's kingdom,

Rev. George L. Erdei

Ministry in the Spotlight

There are numerous churches and Christian organizations that are doing a wonderful work in their communities. They are being a blessing where God has placed them; touching hearts and lives. Each month in this section we will be featuring such a ministry.

Ministry Spotlight for September 2010:

Our History

Volunteers of America was founded in 1896 by social reformers Ballington and Maud Booth. They envisioned a movement dedicated to “reaching and uplifting” the American people. On behalf of the organization, the Booths pledged to “go wherever we are needed, and do whatever comes to hand.” That declaration continues to guide Volunteers of America’s outreach efforts today.

The Early 1900s
In turn-of-the-century America, there was no shortage of work to do. The Volunteers moved into tenement districts to care for people in poverty. They organized day nurseries and summer camps, provided housing for single men and women, and established the nation's first system of halfway houses for released prisoners.

Early Photo of The Booths

The Depression
The Great Depression of the 1930s stretched the nation's private social welfare system almost to the breaking point. Volunteers of America mobilized to assist the millions of people who were unemployed, hungry and homeless. Relief efforts included employment bureaus, wood yards, soup kitchens and "Penny Pantries" where every food item cost one cent.

Wartime
Ballington and Maud in their later yearsVolunteers of America served proudly on the home front during both world wars. The group operated canteens, overnight lodging and Sunday breakfasts for soldiers and sailors on leave. Affordable housing and child care were provided for defense industry workers. Further, Volunteers of America spearheaded community salvage drives during World War II, collecting millions of pounds of scrap metal, rubber and fiber for the war effort.

The 1960s
Our special mission in housing dates to our organization's founding. Volunteers of America helped accelerate real estate development during the 1960s by taking part in numerous federal housing programs. Since 1968, Volunteers of America has developed over 300 affordable housing complexes in more than 30 states.

The 1970s
In the 1970s, the organization emerged as a major provider of professional long-term nursing care. Today, Volunteers of America not only offers home health care and related services, but owns and operates several nursing facilities, and assisted and independent living residences.

Today
Now in our second century of service, Volunteers of America is one of the nation's largest and most comprehensive human services organizations, touching the lives of more than 2 million people each year in hundreds of communities across the United States.

Planning for the next 100 years, Volunteers of America will continue to prove that “there are no limits to caring.® while also establishing ourselves as a leading provider of aging services to the support nation’s rapidly-growing senior population. We will change the aging experience through our most aggressive initiative to date ? Aging with Options™.

Spotlight on Christian Authors

For September we take a look at:

Michael Phillips

In 1970, while students at Humboldt State University, Mike and Judy Phillips began what would become the One Way BookShop as a small, informal source of Christian books and materials for their fellow students. Over the next two decades God prospered those small beginnings, and now the bookstore is a thriving part of the Humboldt County Christian community.

Mike's first published book was about his wife's pregnancy and the birth of their twin sons. After several more nonfiction titles, Mike undertook a lifelong dream to renew the popularity of Scottish writer George MacDonald, whose teachings had been central to Mike and Judy's spiritual growth. Mike began editing some of MacDonald's lengthy novels, heavy with Scottish brogue, into shorter and more readable editions, with some of the work being done right at the bookstore counter between customers.

Through the years, God has continued to guide Mike in the production of books emphasizing strong spiritual values and unforgettable characters. In addition to being bestsellers in Christian bookstores all across the country, Mike's books have been offered through several book clubs, have been translated into a number of foreign languages, and have been published in over 120 editions in all, with sales of over three million. Mike is today recognized as one of the Christian bookselling industry's most prolific and versatile authors.

Family is very important to Mike. He and his wife, Judy, have taught their three sons, Patrick, Robin and Gregory, at home throughout their education. Home schooling enables the family to frequently accompany Mike in his work-related travels.

It has always been Mike's desire in his writing that all who read his books will find a closer and more real walk with God through the characters and stories. Both he and Judy enjoy responses from readers and find great encouragement from the letters they receive.

Psalm 19:1
The heavens declare the glory of God;the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Spotlight on Christian Artists

For September we take a look at Christian Artist:

Keith Newton

Prior to using his talents specifically for the Lord, Keith Newton was a Senior Background Artist at Disney Feature Animation. His past accomplishments include an exhibition in Detroit, Michigan, and two in New York, NY.

Among other awards, Keith has been given the Gold Medallion in the Emerging Artist Competition as well as the Gold Seal from the Pastel Society of America. Keith is married and has two daughters.

Keith Newton excels at painting highly dramatic Biblical scenes, such as his latest painting: The Annunciation to Mary.

The Annunciation to Mary by Keith Newton depicts the angel Gabriel coming down from heaven to proclaim good news to Mary. The scene is described in Luke 1:30-31.

"And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS."

 Christian Ministry to Children

Highlighted in this section is a Christian ministry that has made a positive and lasting impact on future generations; our children. This months ministry was a children's TV show -

  Quigley's Village

Quigley's Village was a long-running (1987 to 1999) collection of Christian children's videos designed to teach children "sound Biblical values" in a fun and exciting way. A combination of live action and puppets, it was very similar in style to Sesame Street but with a biblically-based rather than humanistic approach to communicating values.

Executive Producer Ed Carlstone first conceived of the idea of Quigley's Village when his three-year-old child told a lie. With many episodes translated into Spanish, and a spin-off series (The Simply Grand Quigley Band), Quigley's Village has been seen by millions of children worldwide.

Main characters

* Mr. Quigley (played by Minnesota's Roseville Covenant Church pastor Richard Carlson, also a writer, composer, producer) - The host of Quigley's Village and the person all the puppets look up to and try to emulate. He appears to represent what God wants humans to be. Although no human is realistically perfect, Quigley seems to be. When the other villagers make mistakes, he leads them to a solution, quoting scripture and using common sense to deal with the puppets' problems. He is a gentle man, with a smile on his face at all times.

* Dexter (Robert Auger) - The village's resident handy-man. He is one of the few humans to be featured on the program. Dexter is very helpful, but a little more naive than Mr. Quigley. He is also younger.

* Bubba (puppeteer Paul Lessard) - An orangutan and the main puppet character. He has a very nasal, high-pitched voice. Although Bubba struggles with fear and lying, he tries to come to terms with his sins in a Christlike way. Bubba is arguably the most popular character during the series nearly 12 year run, probably because he comes across as the most human. His struggles with realistic problems that children and even adults can identify with, push him front and centre as the star. His fun loving personality and constant good cheer, earn him a place in the village as a constant good friend.

* Danny (puppeteer Jim Black) - A lion who is, of all the villagers, the biggest joker. He is also Lemon's older brother. Danny's playful personality is balanced with his love of doing what's right. His and Lemon's differing personalities offered several advantages in plot formation throughout the series long run.

* Lemon (puppeteer Debra Auger) - A bright, yellow lion. She is the youngest member of the village (besides possibly Trundle). Danny is her older brother. Lemon embodies the innocence of Quigley's Village. Her constant companion is Mrs. Toddy, a doll.

* Spike (puppeteer Robert Auger) - A porcupine with purple hair and a grey body. She is kind of rough on the outside with a tough New York accent, and spikes, but in the end the other villagers love her dearly. It is argued in some circles that Spike embodies the tough outcast, who has been judged by others as being tough or mean. The villagers on the other hand accept Spike despite her different background. In one episode, she enters the town talent show, claiming she is going to be a star. She is entering to do tap dancing and is basing her act on seeing it on television before. When she finally gets on stage, never having practiced, she bombs.

* Trundle (puppeteer Jim Black) - A toucan, who loves to eat and sleep, sometimes to his own disadvantage. He lives on Mr. Quigley's porch in a cage covered by a blanket, but despite this, Quigley treats him very well. Quigley generally snatches the blanket off in the morning, to which Trundle gives a friendly, albeit tired, "Oh, hello Mr. Quigley."

* Molly (Debra Auger) - The village mailman. She has a nonthreatening personality and delivers the mail every morning. Generally, in the first scene, Molly delivers the mail to Mr. Quigley who comments on what the audience will be learning that day. Molly always wears a safari hat, which to some implies that, due to the many different animals in the village, every episode is like a safari.

Ephesians 6:4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

The Creation Museum -
                 Petersburg, Kentucky

Creation Museum, Petersburg, Kentucky

Be Prepared to Experience History in a Completely Unprecedented Way.

The Creation Museum is a state-of-the-art 70,000 square foot museum brings the pages of the Bible to life, casting its characters and animals in dynamic form and placing them in familiar settings. Adam and Eve live in the Garden of Eden. Children play and dinosaurs roam near Eden’s Rivers. The serpent coils cunningly in the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Majestic murals, great masterpieces brimming with pulsating colors and details, provide a backdrop for many of the settings.

The area within the museum has been divided into unusually configured spaces that allow for personal interaction with each of the 160 exhibits. Several parts of the museum, including the stunning forty-foot high portico with its cliff wall and floor-to-ceiling glass windows, flaunt open spaces and remarkable designs.

Walk through the Garden of Eden. See the scaffolding, smell the freshly-cut timbers in the busy work site of Noah’s Ark. Dig up dinosaur bones—or come face to face with T. Rex.

The themes of the exhibits resound in the theater presentations: Men in White, Six Days of Creation, The Last Adam, and Dinosaurs and Dragons. Our Special Effects Theater, complete with rumbling seats and rising mists, takes visitors on a fantastic quest to find the real purpose and meaning of life.

Each seat is a rocket launching pad in our Stargazers Planetarium. Prepare for lift-off. The digital projector showcases a spectacular gravity-defying spaceflight, a thrilling ride billions of light years away to the vast outer regions of our universe.

Creatures great and small inhabit the three gardens that accentuate the landscape at the Creation Museum. Turtles rest on the logs in the lake, sunning themselves while a 12 foot topiary dinosaur strikes a fearsome pose in the rainforest garden. Bright flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies to the hillside garden, and the bog garden is home to carnivorous plants like the amazing Venus flytrap and pitcher plant.

Over 6,000 plants have been placed within the lake, and 500 varieties of plants fill the gardens, displaying a rich palette of designs. Enjoy a picnic lunch with your family under the shade of our spacious pavilions. Walk down Cherry-tree Lane. The arching bridges, tiled courtyards, and large gazebo are joined with a five-foot-wide paved walkway, just under a mile long, suitable for strollers and wheelchairs.

Don’t miss a chance to enjoy the wonders of God’s creation in our Petting Zoo—something that’s sure to please children of all ages or just the child in you.

Noah’s Café is a perfect stopping place for tired and hungry visitors where you can relax with a sandwich and salad or a snack and beverage. Enjoy seasonal delights at the Lakeside Grill. Or stop for a specialty coffee and more at the Palm Café.

The Dragon Hall Bookstore, rich in dragon lore and legends, offers the latest from Answers in Genesis—videos, gift books, technical books (including Bible dictionaries and reference books), curricula and translations, plus items related to the museum.

Month of September 2010

September is the 9th month of the year in the Gregorian calendar. It has 30 days. Autumns begin in the Northern Hemisphere about September 23, at the autumnal equinox, when the day and night are of equal length. Spring begins in the Southern Hemisphere at the same time.

Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year’s Day usually occurs in September. September is the harvest time in much of the Northern Hemisphere, and in many areas agricultural fairs are held to celebrate the gathering of the crops.

September was the 7th month in the Roman calendar. The name September stems from the Latin word septem (seven). In September the Romans held athletic games in honor of Jupiter, their supreme god. The Anglo-Saxons used the name Gerst-monath (Barley month) for September because they harvested barley during this period.

Prayers of Jesus

The Lord's Prayer (traditional) Matthew 6:9-15

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy Kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory, for ever and ever, Amen

Jesus Prays for Himself

John 17:1-5

1After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: "Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. 5And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

John17:6-19

6"I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. 11I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name—the name you gave me—so that they may be one as we are one. 12While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled. 13"I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.

Jesus Prays for All Believers

John 17:20-26

20"My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: 23I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24"Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. 25"Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them."

Jesus Prays in the Garden of Gethsemane

Mark 14:32-42

32They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." 33He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34"My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death," he said to them. "Stay here and keep watch."

35Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36"Abba, Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will."

37Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Simon," he said to Peter, "are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? 38Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."

39Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

41Returning the third time, he said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!"

Jesus Prayer Examples

Matthew 6:5-12

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. "This, then, is how you should pray: "'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

Matthew 14:22-24

Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away. And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there

Matthew 26:39-44

Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will." He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done." So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

Matthew 26:53

Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?

Matthew 26:39

Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."

Matthew 27:46

About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"--which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

Mark 1:35

And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed

Luke 5:15-16

The report went around concerning Him all the more; and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by Him of their infirmities. So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed.

Luke 6:12

Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.

Luke 9:17-18

And it happened, as He was alone praying, that His disciples joined Him, and He asked them, saying, “Who do the crowds say that I am?

Luke 9:28-31

Now it came to pass, about eight days after these sayings, that He took Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray. As He prayed, the appearance of His face was altered, and His robe became white and glistening. And behold, two men talked with Him, who were Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of His decease which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.

Luke 11:1-13

One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples." He said to them, "When you pray, say: "'Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.'" Then he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and says, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him.' "Then the one inside answers, 'Don't bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I can't get up and give you anything.' I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man's boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs. "So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. "Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

Luke 22:32

But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."

John 11:41-43

So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me." When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!

John 14:16-17

. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

Christian Creeds

Note:  The word "catholic" in the creeds with a lower case 'c' does not mean the Roman Catholic Church, but the universal Christian Church as a whole.

Apostle's Creed

This creed arose out of the early Western church and should be thought of as a summary of the Apostles' teaching rather than directly attributable to them. Originally it was essentially a baptismal confession and had several variations. The form in use today dates from the eighth century.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:
Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.  He descended into hell.

The third day He arose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty,
whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Nicene Creed (325 A.D.)

This creed was first formulated at the First Ecumenical Council, held at Nicea, located in what is now Turkey, in 325, as a response to the Arian heresy, which denied the divinity of Christ.  It was revised at the Second Ecumenical Council, held at Constantinople in 381 as a response to the Macedonian or Pneumatomachian heresy, which denied the divinity of the Holy Spirit.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.  Through him all things were made.  For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.  For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.  On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.  He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father.  With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.  We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.  We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.  We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.  Amen.
